IBBA Hosts Sixth Annual Global Roundup Event

The International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) hosted the Sixth Annual Brangus Global Roundup Thursday, March 6, 2014, during its annual convention in conjunction with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Global Roundup was an educational event that brought domestic producers together with international guests. Dr. Flavio Riberio, a native of Uberaba, Brazil, and currently a research scientist at Prairie View A&M University, served as the master of ceremonies.

Dr. Tommy Shields, assistant professor at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La., discussed live animal evaluation and the importance of evaluating an animal’s confirmation for structural soundness. He demonstrated on a live Brangus heifer in the ballroom by drawing chalk lines indicating key angles and points that are essential in maintaining an animal’s soundness and longevity. He also discussed genetic correlations in cattle and the difficulties trying to breed out confirmation problems if a producer has single-trait selected for other highly heritable traits within their herd.

Leslie Frenzel, doctoral candidate at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, gave a valuable, in-depth demonstration on evaluating cattle from a carcass standpoint. She explained the differences and procedures used by USDA inspectors to determine quality and yield grade in cattle and how to optimize carcass value. She then gave a live demonstration in deboning and processing a rib roll to an engaged crowd of participants. She processed the whole rib roll and explained the economic differences and compared the values of all the tissue it contained.

A delegation from Mexico was also present to promote and extend invitations to the 2014 World Brangus Congress in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, November 10-14.
